Tunisia and Cameroon have secured two of Africa’s three places at the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Cup after reaching the final of the CAVB Men’s Volleyball African Nations Championship in Tunis, Volleyball World reported.
The hosts will meet Cameroon in Friday’s gold-medal match, which also decides Africa’s men’s volleyball berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Morocco and Algeria, the beaten semi-finalists, will play for bronze, with the winner receiving Africa’s remaining World Cup place.
According to Volleyball World, Tunisia beat Morocco 3-1 in their semi-final, recovering from a second-set loss to win 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 25-12. Cameroon followed by defeating Algeria 3-1, taking the match 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-23.
The result means both finalists have qualified for the World Cup in Poland while continuing to contest the African title. The final is scheduled to start at 18:00 local time in Tunis, following the Morocco-Algeria bronze-medal match at 15:00 local time.
Tunisia target Olympic berth on home court
Volleyball World reported that Tunisia had reached the semi-finals without dropping a set, beating Ghana and Kenya in Pool A before overcoming Rwanda in the quarter-finals. Their victory over Morocco was therefore their first four-set match of the championship.
The hosts are pursuing a 12th African Nations Championship title. Volleyball World described Tunisia as the competition’s most decorated side, having won 11 gold medals alongside seven silvers and two bronzes.
Tunisia are ranked 31st in the FIVB World Ranking, compared with Cameroon at 45th, according to the report. That gap gives the home team a rankings advantage on the available evidence, although the final itself offers no margin for error: only the champions receive the direct African Olympic place.
Qualification for the 2027 World Cup also extends Tunisia’s record in that competition. Volleyball World said the tournament in Poland will mark the country’s 12th appearance at the event, previously known as the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. Tunisia’s 12th-place finish at the 2025 edition was reported as their best result in the competition.
Those records give Tunisia the deeper continental history, but they do not alter the immediate qualification condition in Tunis. Volleyball World’s figures show that the hosts’ 11 titles, seven silvers and two bronzes exceed Cameroon’s two titles, five silvers and five bronzes. Cameroon’s most recent medal was silver in 2021, while Tunisia are attempting to add another title to their existing total. The final decides the current championship and Africa’s one direct men’s volleyball place for Los Angeles 2028.
Cameroon recover from Ghana test
Cameroon’s path to the final included a tighter quarter-final. After topping Pool D with wins over DR Congo, Central Africa and Rwanda, Cameroon needed five sets to beat Ghana, prevailing 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14.
Volleyball World reported that Cameroon then produced a 3-1 victory over Algeria in the semi-finals. Having taken the opening two sets, Cameroon lost the third before closing out the contest 25-23 in the fourth.
The Poland event will be Cameroon’s sixth World Cup appearance, according to Volleyball World. The report identified 13th place in 2010 as Cameroon’s best World Championship finish.
Cameroon have won the African championship twice, in 1989 and 2001, and their most recent continental podium was a silver medal in 2021. They finished fourth in 2023, Volleyball World said. Their return to the final therefore gives them an opportunity to add a third title while also competing for the Olympic qualification place.
Morocco and Algeria remain in contention for the third African World Cup ticket. But the final leaves Tunisia and Cameroon with the decisive contest for both the continental gold medal and Africa’s direct place in the men’s volleyball tournament at Los Angeles 2028.
