Finn Russell gives a backline its shape, standing flat at fly-half and pulling the strings with passes that arrive before defenders reset. He can step into centre, yet his best work comes as a half-back who decides when to kick, pass or take the line on. For Scotland he has 95 caps and 513 points. Opponents try to close his space and force him wide, because letting him play on the front foot lets the attack breathe.

Russell is at Bath in Premiership Rugby, with Glasgow Warriors earlier in his career. He has also played for the British & Irish Lions and is a Scotland international. His main role is fly-half, though he covers centre, and his passing and kicking set the tempo for the sides he plays in.
