Sporting and Benfica drew 3-3 in their first league derby of the 2026-27 season, ending Sporting’s perfect league start but leaving Nuno Dias’s side top of the table on 10 points.
Benfica remain five points behind the leaders with a match in hand after a contest at the João Rocha in which neither side could retain control for long. Sporting recovered from Benfica’s second-half lead and then defended their point after Rúben Teixeira’s late dismissal, but Dias regarded the outcome as two points lost because of his side’s missed opportunities.

The draw followed Sporting’s 3-2 Supertaça victory over Benfica. This league meeting did not reproduce that balanced contest, according to Dias, who said Sporting had created a notably larger number of clear openings than they had in the cup match.
Dias identifies finishing as the difference
The Sporting coach said the scoreline, rather than the volume of opportunities, would be remembered. He argued that greater efficiency would have brought victory, while also acknowledging the contribution of Benfica goalkeepers Léo Gugiel and André Correia.
There was substantial evidence for his assessment before the interval. Diogo Santos gave Sporting an early lead from Merlim’s corner, but Benfica responded in under a minute as Arthur set up Silvestre Ferreira. Sporting then left several prominent opportunities unfinished: Rocha sent an effort over an unguarded goal in the 11th minute, and Bruno Pinto struck the crossbar from a penalty.
Gugiel also repelled Sporting during a period in which the home side won possession high up the court and created dangerous situations. At the other end, Bernardo Paçó made saves as Benfica sought to build on their equaliser. Silvestre Ferreira later diverted a Merlim attempt with his arm, while the crossbar again denied Sporting before half-time.
The game remained open after the break. Benfica’s Cléber was twice stopped by Paçó and Tchuda hit the post in the 23rd minute, while Gugiel continued to keep Sporting out. Those moments underlined why a one-goal advantage never looked secure.
Sporting recover but cannot find a winner
Benfica moved ahead in the 26th minute when Paçó lost possession high up the court. Arthur and Kutchy broke forward, with Kutchy completing the move to put Benfica in front.
Sporting’s response was immediate and decisive. Bruno Maior’s corner was inadvertently deflected in by Carlos Monteiro in the 28th minute, restoring parity. Wesley then struck from the right channel two minutes later to put Sporting 3-2 ahead.
Benfica had another goalkeeper intervention to thank for keeping the contest within reach. Correia, introduced in place of Gugiel, made a double save from Tomás Paçó and Bruno Maior in the 33rd minute. Shortly afterwards, Kutchy supplied Cléber, whose finish made it 3-3.
The final phase tested Sporting’s defence rather than their finishing. Teixeira was sent off in the 36th minute, giving Benfica a four-against-three advantage. Dias said Sporting defended that situation very well, organised themselves effectively despite fatigue and did not permit Benfica a major chance.
Sporting nevertheless still had an opportunity to take all three points, but Merlim shot wide with 20 seconds remaining. Dias said he was pleased with the quality, commitment and attitude shown by his players, as well as their efforts to chase the match as the score changed.
For Sporting, the draw ends an unblemished league record without costing first place. Benfica remain five points behind Sporting with a game in hand after the draw.
