Lhuan-dre Pretorius has set a new highest individual score in men’s T20 cricket after making an unbeaten 188 from 79 balls for Titans against Knights in South Africa’s CSA T20 Challenge.
The 20-year-old left-hander struck 15 fours and 13 sixes at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein as Titans posted 267-3 from their 20 overs. Knights were then dismissed for 143 in 17.2 overs, leaving Titans with a 124-run victory.
Pretorius’ innings moved beyond the previous top score in a men’s T20 match, Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League in 2013. The new mark came in a domestic fixture, but its place in the format’s individual scoring records gives the innings significance beyond the competition.
A rapid climb through the landmarks
He reached 50 from 24 balls, 100 after a further 16 deliveries and 150 from 58 balls. The BBC reported that he reached fifty from 24 deliveries, needed only another 16 balls to reach his century, and brought up 150 from 58 balls. His final strike rate was 237.97.
Sky Sports reported that Pretorius was on course for 200 before Titans’ 20 overs expired. His 188 not out accounted for the overwhelming share of a total which left Knights requiring 268 to win.

The BBC reported that Pretorius had played 17 T20s, three one-day internationals and two Tests for South Africa. Those figures provide context for the record arriving in the early stage of his senior career. The innings was unbeaten because Titans’ 20-over allocation ended before he could add to his score, with Sky Sports reporting that he ran out of overs while approaching a double century.
That total proved beyond Knights despite their brisk start. They reached 52-2 inside five overs, but Dayyaan Galiem bowled Jacques Snyman for 32 and Eathan Bosch removed Cole Abrahams for 12. Gihahan Cloete led the reply with 39 from 25 balls, according to Sky Sports, but the chase lost momentum as the required rate rose.
Donovan Ferreira returned 3-16 for Titans, while Tabraiz Shamsi took 2-23. Those figures completed a result in which Pretorius’ extraordinary innings supplied the decisive separation between the teams.
Gayle’s mark surpassed
Gayle’s 175 not out had stood as the highest score in a men’s T20 match since 2013. Pretorius passed it by 13 runs, turning an already exceptional innings into a new benchmark for the format.
The record is notable not only for the final number but for the sustained rate at which Pretorius scored. The 13 sixes and 15 fours helped Titans reach 267-3 from 20 overs.

The result also meant the record innings directly shaped the contest rather than arriving in a narrow defeat or a reduced-impact performance. Titans’ 267-3 gave their bowlers a substantial total to defend, and Knights were bowled out 124 runs short.
Sky Sports reported that Pretorius had entered the match in productive form despite being affected by injury, having made 101 from 53 balls for South Africa against Namibia in a T20 international in his previous innings. His score against Knights now represents a far greater individual landmark, while also underlining a run of high-scoring returns.
What the score establishes
Pretorius’ 188 is now the highest individual total reported in a men’s T20 match, ahead of Gayle’s former record. The achievement does not by itself determine how he will perform in future international or domestic matches, but it has placed the Titans batter at the top of the men’s T20 individual-score record.
For Titans, the immediate outcome was emphatic: a total of 267-3 followed by a 124-run win. For Pretorius, the unbeaten innings ensured he finished with both the match’s defining contribution and the format’s new individual high score.
