Raoni Barcelos was stable, alert and responsive after being taken to a Level 1 trauma centre following his fifth-round defeat by Raul Rosas Jr in the UFC Vegas 121 main event, according to a UFC statement reported by ESPN and MMA Fighting.
The bantamweight contest ended 1 minute and 38 seconds into the final round after Rosas completed a takedown from a clinch near the fence. Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness during the sequence, referee Herb Dean stopped the fight and the Brazilian was removed from the cage on a stretcher.
Attention then shifted to Barcelos’ welfare. The UFC said he underwent a CT scan and a comprehensive assessment and remained under observation. The statement described him as having full movement as well as being stable, alert and responsive.
Rosas completes a final-round comeback
Rosas entered the fifth round behind on all three judges’ scorecards, ESPN reported. MMA Fighting added that one judge had awarded Barcelos a 10-8 fourth round, illustrating the size of the competitive task facing Rosas before the finish.
ESPN’s account said Rosas increased the pressure at the start of the last round. He drove Barcelos towards the fence, worked from the clinch and completed the takedown which brought the contest to an abrupt end.
The report said Barcelos appeared to make contact with either the canvas or the cage during the takedown. That description concerns the visible fight sequence only; neither the UFC update nor coach Davi Ramos’ later message identified a medical cause for the loss of consciousness.
Dean intervened as soon as he recognised that Barcelos appeared unconscious. Barcelos remained on the canvas after the stoppage and was then carried from the cage for medical attention.
Rosas was visibly shaken during his post-fight interview. ESPN reported that he asked the crowd to pray for Barcelos and paid tribute to his opponent rather than dwelling on the result.
The victory was Rosas’ sixth in succession and moved his professional record to 13-1, according to ESPN. Barcelos’ record moved to 22-6 after a contest he had been leading with one round remaining.
ESPN also noted the experience gap between the two fighters. Rosas joined the UFC in 2022 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest fighter to sign with the promotion, while the 39-year-old Barcelos is 17 years older. The report described that as the widest age gap in a UFC main event.
ESPN described Barcelos as the biggest test of Rosas’ career to that point. The scorecards supported that assessment in competitive terms: Rosas reached the final round needing a decisive response against an opponent who had controlled enough of the first four rounds to lead with every judge.
Barcelos remains under observation
The UFC’s medical update said Barcelos was taken to a Level 1 trauma centre, where clinicians carried out the CT scan and assessment. The statement reported his condition after those checks but did not give a timetable for his release.
Ramos subsequently issued a separate update on social media. MMA Fighting reported that the coach said Barcelos had regained his senses, was conscious and talking, and could move his legs, arms and hands.
The coach said Barcelos was undergoing the standard tests required after the incident and would need rest. He thanked people who had sent messages and asked supporters to continue thinking of the fighter while the examinations continued.
Barcelos had been pursuing a sixth consecutive UFC victory, MMA Fighting reported. Ramos said the performance had shown the fighter’s technique, skill and commitment, while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the sport. His comments addressed the work behind the performance; the UFC statement remained the formal account of Barcelos’ condition after assessment.
