Czechia won the Billie Jean King Cup for the 12th time after Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova delivered a 2-0 final victory over first-time finalists Ukraine in Shenzhen on 27 September.
Muchova put Czechia ahead by beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 6-3 in the opening singles rubber. Noskova then completed the title win with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) success against Elina Svitolina, meaning a doubles match was not required.
The result brought Czechia its first Billie Jean King Cup crown since 2018. Only the United States, with 18 titles, has won the women’s team competition more often.
Muchova and Noskova complete Czechia’s singles sweep
Muchova’s straight-sets win gave Czechia an early advantage against Kalinina, before Noskova faced Svitolina in the decisive second singles match. Noskova won the opening set 6-3 and came through a tie-break in the second to secure the trophy.
According to ESPN, Noskova struck 10 aces to Svitolina’s six in the match that settled the tie. Svitolina saved two match points before Noskova converted her third, after which the Czech player fell onto her back and captain Barbora Strycova came on court to celebrate.
Against Ukraine, Muchova did not face a break point and broke Kalinina four times from five opportunities, according to Tennis TourTalk. Her opening victory ensured Noskova went into the second singles rubber with Czechia needing only one more point to claim the final.
The two Czech players had met one another in the Wimbledon final earlier in 2026, but combined for their country in Shenzhen. Their victories also underlined the depth available to captain Barbora Strycova during the Finals, where Katerina Siniakova was in the squad but was not needed for a doubles rubber.
Czechia won all three of its Finals ties by a 2-0 scoreline. As well as the final against Ukraine, it beat Great Britain in the quarter-finals and Spain in the semi-finals without having to play doubles. The BBC reported that the Czech team lost only one set across the tournament.
Those results meant Czechia’s campaign was settled entirely by its singles players, rather than being taken to the deciding doubles rubber available in each tie. ESPN reported that Siniakova, described as Czechia’s leading doubles player, did not have to play during the Finals. Muchova and Noskova therefore supplied the points that defined the team’s run through Shenzhen.
For British readers, the eventual champions’ quarter-final victory provides context for Great Britain’s exit in Shenzhen. GB captain Anne Keothavong had described Czechia as the strongest team at the event after that tie, according to the BBC.
Strycova wins as captain in first year
The title was Strycova’s first as Czechia captain, in her first year in the role. She had previously won the competition as a player, and ESPN reported that she became the fourth woman to have won it both as a player and captain.
ESPN reported that Margaret Court, Chris Evert and Billie Jean King were the other women to have achieved that player-and-captain distinction. It adds a personal milestone to a title won through Czechia’s singles strength across the week.
That achievement places the result in a broader team context, but the final was settled by Muchova and Noskova’s singles victories. Muchova’s opening point gave Noskova the opportunity to close the tie with the team already 1-0 ahead.
Ukraine had reached its first Billie Jean King Cup final after eliminating two-time defending champions Italy in the semi-finals. ESPN also reported that Ukraine were without Marta Kostyuk because of a right wrist injury.
