Tin-Tin Ho has been knocked out of the China Smash women’s singles qualifying draw after France’s Audrey Zarif recovered from two games down to win their second-round match in Beijing.
Table Tennis England reported that Ho took the first two games and then held two match points in the third, but Zarif turned the contest around to complete a 3-2 victory. The defeat ended Ho’s attempt to reach the main draw through qualifying after a controlled straight-games win over Chile’s Paulina Vega in her opening match.
Ho’s loss was especially difficult because she had established a strong position early against Zarif. She won the opening game 12-10 on her second game point, before leading throughout the second and taking it 11-7. That gave Ho a two-game advantage in a match in which progression towards the main draw was at stake.
Two match points slip away in third game
The third game became the pivotal passage of the match. Table Tennis England said Ho trailed 8-5 before recovering to create a match point at 10-9 and another at 11-10. Zarif saved both opportunities and edged the game 13-11, cutting Ho’s lead and changing the direction of the contest.

Ho remained in front at 7-4 in the fourth game, but did not score again as Zarif won seven consecutive points to level the match. The French player then made the faster start in the deciding game, taking its first four points before closing it out 11-3.
The result means Ho did not progress from the qualifying competition into the women’s singles main draw. It also underlined how narrow the margins were: her two-game lead and match points in the third had put her close to a straight-games win, only for Zarif to win the final three games.
Opening win had put Ho in control
Ho had begun her campaign with a 3-0 victory over Vega, who was listed at world No 149 in Table Tennis England’s report. Ho, listed at No 80, won 11-5, 11-3 and 11-9.
Against Vega, Ho made the early running in the first game and used a five-point sequence from 4-2 to take control. Her second game was more decisive, as she won the first three points and 10 of the first 11. Vega led only briefly in the third, moving 4-1 ahead, but Ho recovered to 6-4 and did not fall behind again.
Table Tennis England said Ho took her third game point in the second game to establish the 2-0 lead. In the final game against Vega, the Chilean twice reduced a two-point deficit after Ho had recovered from 4-1 down to lead 6-4. Ho nevertheless stayed in front for the remainder of the game and completed the straight-games victory 11-9.

That performance had earned Ho the meeting with Zarif, listed at No 105, but the French player’s response after the third game prevented Ho from carrying her singles run further in Beijing.
Further involvement in main draw and doubles
Other players covered by Table Tennis England remain involved across the China Smash programme. Wales’ Anna Hursey was seeded directly into the women’s singles main draw and has been drawn against Chien Tung-Chuan of Chinese Taipei, who was listed at world No 52.
Ho also remains entered in mixed doubles with Connor Green. The pair have been drawn to play Chile’s Gustavo Gomez and Daniela Ortega in the round of 32. Table Tennis England said the winners would face seventh seeds Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei.
Green’s men’s singles qualifying campaign also ended in a deciding game, with Egypt’s Youssef Abdelaziz winning 3-2. Liam Pitchford likewise lost a five-game contest against Belgium’s Cedric Nuytinck after advancing through his first two qualifiers. Their results, alongside Ho’s, show the difficulty of progressing from the qualifying draw at the Beijing event, even after players have built significant leads within individual matches.
