Henry Pollock has signed a new multi-year Northampton Saints contract extension which will keep the England and British & Irish Lions back row at his boyhood club until the summer of 2028.
The 21-year-old has chosen to remain with Saints despite domestic and international approaches which his adviser, Eddie Hearn, told BBC Sport were worth hundreds of thousands of pounds more than Northampton’s agreement. The values of those rival offers were Hearn’s account of Pollock’s options during the negotiations.
Sky Sports understands that the Saints deal is worth more than £400,000 a year. BBC Sport also reported that the extension was valued above that level, although the figure has not been presented as a club-confirmed salary.
Pollock has been a key member of Northampton’s side since breaking through as a 17-year-old in 2022. Sky Sports reported that he produced a Player of the Match performance in Saints’ PREM final victory last season. He has also won 13 England caps and five British & Irish Lions caps.
Pollock points to Saints squad and trophy ambitions
In a statement issued alongside the announcement, Pollock said he was very happy to recommit to the club he had supported as a boy. He said Northampton was the right place for him at this point in his career, citing the youth of the squad, its potential to develop and his relationships within the group.
Pollock said Saints wanted to defend the PREM title they won last season and pursue the Champions Cup. He described winning that competition as a major aim for the group, having said Northampton had come close to doing so a couple of years earlier.
Northampton director of rugby Phil Dowson said the club was delighted that Pollock had committed his future. Dowson said Pollock’s quality on the pitch had been clear over recent years and said retaining a player with his talent and mindset was important for Saints.
The extension follows public discussion over Pollock’s next move. In August, Hearn said he valued Pollock’s annual salary prospects at £1m. Sky Sports journalist James Cole said the PREM salary-cap structure had raised questions over whether Pollock could reach that figure while remaining at Northampton.
Hearn says offers came from Britain and abroad
Hearn told BBC Sport that Pollock had received a small number of approaches from PREM clubs as well as international offers. He said Pollock did not want to leave Northampton, despite knowing the sums available elsewhere, and had elected to stay even though he could have earned substantially more.
According to Hearn, some interested sides offered annual terms well above £1m. He also said Pollock’s basic Saints salary did not reach the £1m level he had previously identified as a target. Hearn said a signing bonus and payments for off-pitch work had to be considered alongside the headline club figure.
Hearn further said endorsement agreements had taken Pollock’s total annual earnings above £1m. Those comments concerned Pollock’s broader commercial income rather than the reported annual value of the Saints contract.
Cole said the new agreement represented a substantial improvement for Pollock and kept him at his hometown club and in England. He added that only Pollock could say how seriously he had considered leaving, while describing the public nature of the negotiations as unusual in rugby.
Salary-cap rules form important backdrop
The PREM salary cap is £6.4m per club, according to BBC Sport. The BBC reported that each team can have one player whose salary is exempt from the calculation, while a player moving between top-tier clubs can only qualify for that marquee status after two years with a new side.
Sky Sports reported that Northampton’s marquee-player place was held by England fly-half Fin Smith, meaning that exemption was not available for Pollock in its account of the club’s position. That structure provides the context for Hearn’s claims about the scale of offers that were available elsewhere.
Hearn said he would prefer the cap to be removed, arguing that players should be able to earn more. That was Hearn’s view on the competition’s financial rules, rather than a position set out by Northampton or PREM Rugby.
For Saints, the confirmed outcome is that Pollock will remain part of a squad seeking to retain its PREM title and challenge for the Champions Cup. The deal retains a 21-year-old back row with 13 England caps and five Lions caps through summer 2028.
The agreement may also permit future discussions over a possible Great Britain rugby sevens opportunity at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. BBC Sport reported that Pollock was keen to explore the possibility, although Hearn said Northampton remained his principal playing commitment and that any arrangement would require discussion with the club. The BBC also reported that the contract did not include dedicated time for sevens training.
