Sun Goddess added the Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes to her record at Newmarket, beating Libertango by a length in the six-furlong Group One and setting a course record of 1min 9.08sec.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained two-year-old, ridden by Ryan Moore, started as the 5-6 favourite and claimed her third Group One victory from eight starts. Alwaysanangel finished a length and a half behind Libertango in third.
The success provided a demanding test of Sun Goddess’s range after her previous win in the seven-furlong Moyglare Stud Stakes on soft ground. This time she prevailed over a shorter trip after a strongly run race on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, a performance O’Brien said had underlined the filly’s unusual combination of speed and stamina.
Sun Goddess responds after early pressure
Snowing and Moonrise ensured there was a solid pace, with Sun Goddess travelling in midfield alongside Senorita Bonita. Moore moved his filly towards the stands’ side, but she needed encouragement before the race developed in earnest.
Libertango, racing on the far side under Billy Loughnane, arrived from the rear to challenge, while Senorita Bonita also made ground from midfield. Moonrise and Senorita Bonita then weakened, leaving Sun Goddess and Libertango to race together before the favourite asserted in the closing stages.
Sporting Life reported that Sun Goddess took control around 50 yards from the line, while Sky Sports Racing described her as finding more when she met the rising ground. Her time established a new course record, adding a notable numerical marker to a victory achieved after she had briefly been the first horse off the bridle.
O’Brien said the early pressure had helped Sun Goddess settle into her rhythm. He explained that the stable had been concerned she might travel too smoothly before events unfolded quickly around her, but felt that coming under pressure early made her difficult for rivals to contain.
Trainer highlights distance and ground versatility
O’Brien characterised the Cheveley Park as a major examination because it followed Sun Goddess’s Moyglare success over seven furlongs on soft ground. O’Brien said the switch from seven furlongs on soft ground in the Moyglare to six furlongs at Newmarket was a substantial change, and he said she had passed that test.
He also highlighted her ability to compete repeatedly at the top level despite being only a two-year-old. O’Brien said he could not recall training a filly with her particular mix of class, speed and distance range, while noting her relaxed manner before the race and Moore’s satisfaction with the performance.
The trainer’s comments offer the clearest guide to the competitive significance of the result: Sun Goddess has now won major races over both six and seven furlongs, rather than being confined by the conditions of her Moyglare victory. That proven adaptability may give her connections options, while her Breeders’ Cup participation remains conditional on her recovery.
Keeneland decision will depend on recovery
O’Brien said Sun Goddess would be assessed over the following week or so before connections decide whether the Cheveley Park had taken enough out of her to affect a possible Breeders’ Cup trip. Sporting Life identified the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland as a potential target, while Sky Sports Racing reported that she could be considered for a mile there.
Any American run therefore remains conditional on her recovery. Following the Newmarket result, bookmakers listed her as favourite for next season’s 1,000 Guineas. That market reaction is not a guarantee of future performance, but it reflects how decisively her latest Group One has strengthened her standing among the leading juvenile fillies.
