Orthodox gave trainer Clive Cox a third success in the Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, overcoming Force Noir by a neck to register his first Group One victory on 26 September.
Sky Sports Racing reported that Rossa Ryan rode the horse, who had previously won the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, and made his challenge around three furlongs from home. Force Noir, described by the broadcaster as an outsider, had set a strong early pace and continued to press Orthodox to the finish.
Favourite Inner City Blues did not make an impact on the finish, according to the report, while Orthodox’s success represented a return to winning form after defeat in the Prix Morny.
Cox praises Ryan after Newmarket test
Cox said the quicker ground had been a positive for Orthodox at this time of year, while he had also been keen to see how the horse would cope with the Newmarket track. The trainer said Orthodox had shown on the course the ability his team had seen at home.
The trainer particularly credited Ryan’s handling through the dip, saying the jockey had helped the horse negotiate that part of the course before asking him to go forward. Cox added that Ryan’s regular work at home meant he knew both the horse and the task in front of him.
For Cox, the result added to Middle Park victories with Reckless Abandon in 2012 and Supremacy in 2020. Sky Sports Racing reported that Orthodox, like Supremacy, is owned by Jason Goddard.
Cox said the victory had been the product of a substantial team effort in getting Orthodox to Newmarket. He also said quicker ground was a bonus and that Orthodox had shown the ability his team had seen at home. The neck margin underlined the pressure Orthodox faced from Force Noir in the closing stages, but he held on for the top-level breakthrough.
The Newmarket success also supplied a further piece of evidence about Orthodox’s distance range. Cox said he believed the horse had the speed to perform over five furlongs and the stamina to race over six, adding that the Middle Park performance had demonstrated that he stayed the longer of those two trips.
Thoroughbred Daily News reported that Orthodox and Force Noir could have been bought at Kildare Paddocks 12 months earlier for €175,000 and €130,000 respectively. The report described the pair as the first two home in the Group One. That sale background is separate from the race itself, but it provides context for a close finish decided by a neck. Orthodox’s record cited by Sky Sports Racing now includes the Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs and the Middle Park success which Cox said showed that he stayed six furlongs.
Breeders’ Cup discussed as a possible next step
Cox indicated that a Breeders’ Cup campaign would be considered, though he stressed that connections would first assess how Orthodox had recovered and discuss the option with Goddard over the following days.
That wording leaves the American trip as a possibility rather than a confirmed plan. It nonetheless gives a potential next-stage target to a horse whose season has included both the Norfolk Stakes and this top-level Newmarket win.
Bookmakers Ladbrokes and Coral quoted Orthodox at 12-1 for next year’s Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, Sky Sports Racing reported. Those odds are a market assessment rather than a declaration of intention, but they reflect the view that his future is likely to remain in sprint races.
Orthodox’s Group One breakthrough therefore carries significance beyond a single close finish. After the Prix Morny defeat, he has again shown that he can win at a major level, while Cox’s comments suggest his connections have options across five and six furlongs before settling on a programme.
