Emphatic wins Alcibiades at Keeneland

Emphatic remained unbeaten in three starts by defeating Summer Starlet in Keeneland’s Grade One Alcibiades Stakes, securing a Breeders’ Cup place.

Emphatic stayed unbeaten with a one-and-a-quarter-length victory over Summer Starlet in the Grade One Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland, earning a fees-paid place in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at the same track on 30 October.

The two-year-old filly, trained by Brendan Walsh and ridden for the first time by Tyler Gaffalione, made the running in the one-mile-and-a-sixteenth contest on 2 October. She completed the race in 1min 43.40sec on a track described as fast, with Oh She Said Yes third.

The result took Emphatic’s record to three wins from three starts. The Pennsylvania-bred races for Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen, and collected first prize of $302,250 in the Alcibiades, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.

Emphatic and Summer Starlet draw clear

Emphatic broke sharply from the inside stall and Gaffalione retained the rail and the lead. Summer Starlet, the odds-on favourite and winner of the Grade One Spinaway Stakes, tracked closely as the pair drew steadily further away from the remainder.

Horse Racing Nation reported that the eventual first and second were never separated by more than a length at any call until the closing stages. Emphatic set fractions of 24.45sec, 48.74sec, 1min 12.49sec and 1min 36.92sec before pulling clear late.

Summer Starlet finished 17 and a half lengths ahead of Oh She Said Yes, underlining how decisively the leading pair had separated themselves from the other runners. Ever Forward was fourth, followed by Forever Carina, High Speed Reed and For the Money. Elewene was withdrawn.

Gaffalione reported that Emphatic’s alert start allowed her to establish a favourable position and said she travelled with confidence before responding when asked for her effort. The jockey’s first ride on the filly resulted in her first graded and Grade One success.

The time was reported by Horse Racing Nation as the fourth-fastest Alcibiades since the race was extended to one mile and a sixteenth in 1981, and the quickest since Keeneland returned to dirt in 2014.

Breeders’ Cup place secured

The Alcibiades is a ‘Win and You’re In’ qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, which will be staged over the same course and distance on 30 October. Emphatic’s success therefore gives her connections a secured, fees-paid route into that championship race rather than merely a prospective target.

Walsh indicated after the race that the Breeders’ Cup was on Emphatic’s programme. He said the filly had been difficult mentally during her early preparation, but had become more straightforward with racing. He credited his team for helping her develop and considered her progression through her three starts an encouraging sign.

The entrance to Keeneland Racecourse in Kentucky

Before Keeneland, Emphatic won a maiden at Colonial Downs on 25 July by six and three-quarter lengths and then took the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park on 29 August by five and a quarter lengths. Those front-running displays preceded her first Grade One win and first graded-stakes success.

Summer Starlet’s race contained an incident that her rider, Flavien Prat, said occurred near the five-furlong pole. Prat reported that he believed another runner had clipped his filly’s heel and that she temporarily lost her hind action before regaining her rhythm. A head-on replay showed Oh She Said Yes moving in from behind towards Summer Starlet’s right-hind leg, Horse Racing Nation reported.

Summer Starlet’s trainer, Steve Asmussen, said the runner-up had returned well and credited Emphatic with a strong performance. Horse Racing Nation reported that a further meeting between the two fillies in the Breeders’ Cup could be possible if both were well after the race, but that remains conditional rather than an announced rematch.

For Emphatic, the immediate outcome is more definite: an unbeaten filly has moved from regional victories to a Grade One win and has a confirmed place in Keeneland’s end-of-month championship event.
