Daryz retired after second Arc victory

Dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Daryz has been retired after his final racecourse success, with a stallion career due to begin in 2027.

Daryz has been retired from racing after his second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory, Aga Khan Studs has announced, bringing the career of the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained colt to a close with nine wins from 12 starts. The son of Sea The Stars is due to begin a stallion career in 2027, although his stud arrangements have yet to be confirmed.

The decision follows Daryz’s successful defence of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp. His final victory made him the first colt since Alleged, in 1977 and 1978, to win the Arc in successive seasons. Aga Khan Studs said the colt would now join its stallion roster, while a more detailed announcement on his future breeding role is expected in due course.

Daryz leaves racing with almost £5.5m in prize money, according to Sporting Life Racing, and with four Group One wins achieved across trips ranging from nine furlongs to a mile and a half. That range is a useful measure of the ability he showed during his final two seasons: his biggest wins were not confined to the mile-and-a-half distance at which he twice won the Arc.

A career ended at its highest point

Daryz had already established a strong record before becoming an Arc winner. Thoroughbred Daily News reported that he won his first four starts as a three-year-old, with his first Group-race success arriving in the Prix Eugene Adam at Saint-Cloud. He then ended that campaign by taking his first Arc, narrowly defeating Minnie Hauk.

Kept in training as a four-year-old, Daryz returned with Group One wins in the Prix Ganay and Prix d’Ispahan before travelling to Britain for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

His visit to Royal Ascot produced a third-place finish behind Ombudsman in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. That result interrupted his winning sequence, but it did not prove to be his final major contribution on the racecourse. Daryz regained a winning run in September when he beat Bay City Roller by nearly two lengths in the Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp.

He then met Bay City Roller again in the Arc and again finished in front. His 2026 campaign included Group One wins in the Prix Ganay, Prix d’Ispahan and Arc. Across his career, his four Group One victories ranged from nine furlongs to a mile and a half. The sequence means his retirement followed a Prix Foy win and a successful Arc defence, rather than another racecourse defeat.

Why the second Arc matters

Successive Arc victories are the central distinction of Daryz’s record. Thoroughbred Daily News listed Ksar, Tantieme, Ribot and Alleged among the earlier horses to have achieved the feat, while Sporting Life Racing reported that Daryz was the first colt to do so since Alleged’s wins in the late 1970s.

His final Arc also underlined the consistency of the partnership with jockey Mickaël Barzalona. Barzalona rode Daryz in each of his nine career wins, according to Thoroughbred Daily News. The rider said the second Arc had demonstrated the colt’s quality, while Graffard indicated that Daryz had nothing further to prove after completing the repeat success.

His retirement ends the prospect of further racecourse appearances, as he is scheduled to begin a stallion career in 2027. Instead, attention shifts to Daryz’s stallion career, with Aga Khan Studs yet to specify where he will stand or provide further details of the arrangements. For racing followers, the immediate consequence is that his Arc defence stands as his final racecourse appearance and the benchmark by which the closing phase of his career will be judged.

Daryz’s pedigree gives that next stage an evident sporting interest. His dam, Daryakana, won the Hong Kong Vase and the Prix de Royallieu, while Thoroughbred Daily News reported that she had produced several stakes winners before Daryz. His retirement therefore closes an elite racing career while opening a breeding chapter that his owners have said will begin in 2027.
