Kirill Marchenko has joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in a multi-player trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets and subsequently agreed a six-year, $75m contract extension with his new club.
Toronto acquired the 26-year-old forward alongside winger Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins. Columbus received forwards Matthew Knies and Steven Lorentz, defenceman Emil Andrae and a conditional second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft which had belonged to the Seattle Kraken.
The move gives the Maple Leafs an established scorer for the opening of the new season, but it also parts the club with Knies, a 23-year-old who recorded 23 goals and 66 points in 79 games last season. The Hockey Writers noted that Knies had produced 58-point and 66-point seasons in succession, illustrating the value Toronto have chosen to move in pursuit of Marchenko.
Marchenko arrives with a long-term commitment
Marchenko posted 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games for Columbus last season. Toronto’s six-year extension means the club have made a substantial commitment beyond the trade itself, rather than simply adding a player on a short-term basis.
Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka said the club believed Marchenko could be a player capable of having a major influence on results. He said Toronto accepted it had to surrender quality players to obtain quality, and argued that the team’s centre options, potential line combinations and the role available to Marchenko could offer further upside.

That assessment remains Toronto’s projection rather than a guarantee. The immediate comparison is likely to centre on what Marchenko can add offensively against the production and potential surrendered in Knies, whose age and two consecutive strong scoring campaigns made him a significant outgoing asset.
The transaction is also part of a broader off-season reshaping of the Maple Leafs’ roster. Chayka said Toronto had made many changes, while The Hockey News reported that the club could have 10 players in its opening-night line-up who did not play for the team last season. Marchenko’s arrival is therefore a defining element of an overhaul already under way, not an isolated adjustment.
Andrae is another meaningful part of the return for Columbus. TSN reported that the 24-year-old defenceman had two goals and 13 points in 61 games for the Philadelphia Flyers last season, averaging 15 minutes and 20 seconds of ice time. He had only joined Toronto during the off-season, arriving with goaltender Samuel Ersson and a 2026 third-round pick in the deal that sent Simon Benoit and Joseph Woll to Philadelphia.

Opening-night availability remains uncertain
There is an immediate practical question over whether Marchenko can make his Maple Leafs debut in the season opener against the Montreal Canadiens. TSN reported that he still needed to complete the work-visa process required to play in Canada, with no certainty that it would be finished in time.
Wood will not immediately strengthen Toronto’s NHL forward group. Chayka confirmed that the 31-year-old will join the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. Wood registered eight goals and 14 points in 54 games for Columbus last season and is entering the fourth year of a six-year contract carrying a $2.5m annual cap hit, according to TSN.
Merzlikins also arrives unavailable in the short term. Chayka said the goaltender underwent off-season surgery before the trade and has a three-to-five-month timeline for his return. His inclusion gives Toronto another goaltending asset, but the reported recovery schedule means the acquisition offers no immediate on-ice solution from him.
For Columbus, Knies and Andrae were expected to practise with their new team on Wednesday and be ready for its opener against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, TSN reported. Toronto, meanwhile, have committed to Marchenko as a central part of their altered group, with his visa status the first issue to resolve after a trade that changes the shape of both squads.
