Alex Ovechkin to retire after season

Alex Ovechkin has confirmed he will retire at the end of the NHL season, with further scoring and Capitals milestones still within reach.

Alex Ovechkin has said he will retire from the NHL at the end of the season, bringing down the curtain on a Washington Capitals career in which he became the league’s all-time leading regular-season goalscorer.

The 41-year-old announced his decision before Washington’s first home game of the campaign. Ovechkin said he still loved the sport, but had concluded that retirement was the right decision for him.

His statement put the focus on the people who have supported him and his family through both successes and defeats. He also said he was looking forward to the season with his team-mates and that the Capitals would do all they could to make it special.

Ovechkin’s final campaign will therefore be played with both a team objective and several significant statistical markers still in view. The Capitals are due to face the Pittsburgh Penguins at Capital One Arena on Wednesday in their first home game since the announcement.

A record-breaking Capitals career

Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL career with Washington. The Capitals selected him first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft, and he made his NHL debut in October 2005 after moving to North America from Dynamo Moscow at the age of 20.

According to the BBC, he scored twice in his first NHL game, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Across 1,575 games for Washington, he has registered 929 regular-season goals and 759 assists, giving him 1,688 points. That points total places him 10th in NHL history, the BBC reported.

The defining individual landmark arrived in April 2025. Ovechkin scored his 895th regular-season goal to move beyond Wayne Gretzky’s previous NHL record of 894, which had stood for 31 years. His current total of 929 places him ahead of Gretzky and Gordie Howe, who scored 801 regular-season goals.

His achievements have not been limited to longevity. The BBC reported that Ovechkin has scored at least 40 goals in 14 of his 21 NHL seasons, an NHL record. He also helped Washington win the organisation’s only Stanley Cup in the 2017-18 season.

Those figures give the retirement announcement a wider sporting context. Ovechkin’s 1,575 appearances, 1,688 points and record 14 seasons of at least 40 goals reflect a sustained Washington career rather than a single scoring landmark. The Stanley Cup success also remains the club’s only title in the competition.

That combination of sustained scoring and a title gives the final season a clear competitive context. Washington will be seeking to make the campaign meaningful as a team, while Ovechkin’s remaining matches offer the possibility of further movement in the record books. Whether either outcome is achieved remains uncertain, but the targets are defined.

Milestones remain within reach

Although Ovechkin has already passed Gretzky’s regular-season scoring total, he is still 11 goals short of Gretzky’s combined total for regular-season and play-off goals, according to the BBC. Reaching that figure would give him another scoring distinction across the two competitions combined.

There is also a Capitals-specific mark nearby. Ovechkin is four assists away from passing Nicklas Backstrom’s franchise record of 762 career assists. He begins the season on 759, so that particular chase concerns a different side of his contribution from the goals that have defined so much of his career.

For Washington, the announcement provides clarity before the home schedule begins. Ovechkin said he intended to enjoy the season with his family, his sons, the club’s supporters and those who have been part of his hockey career. His retirement will not take effect immediately, but every appearance in the season ahead will now be part of his final NHL chapter.

The Capitals’ task is to turn that farewell season into a competitive one. Ovechkin’s own stated ambition is for the group to make the year special, while his remaining goals and assists will determine how many more landmarks are added before his playing career ends.
