Brereton Diaz ends Sheffield United’s 44-year league wait against Wrexham

Sheffield United beat Wrexham 1-0 at Bramall Lane to record their first league victory over the Welsh club since October 1982. Ben Brereton Diaz scored the only goal in a match controlled by the home side.

Jordan Ayew’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, but the ball fell into the path of Brereton Diaz. The forward scored from the rebound in the 30th minute.

The finish rewarded Sheffield United for carrying the greater threat. They moved the ball with more purpose and kept Wrexham away from the most dangerous central areas.

Wrexham offered little before added time

The visitors struggled to turn possession into chances and did not register a shot on target until the 96th minute. Sheffield United protected their lead without being forced into a long period of emergency defending.

Wrexham made two changes at half-time but still did not register a shot on target until the 96th minute. They have played eight Championship matches without a clean sheet, their longest such run since 2007.

A penalty appeal did not change the first half

Wrexham appealed for a penalty in the 33rd minute, but the referee allowed play to continue. Sheffield United kept their shape and finished the match with four shots on target to Wrexham’s one.

Brereton Diaz’s goal was his first of the season. He has now scored in three consecutive meetings with Wrexham, giving the same opponent another decisive problem.

Sheffield United climbed to 10th place

The Blades moved into 10th before the rest of the round was completed. The narrow victory was their first league win over Wrexham since 1982.

A disciplined second half mattered more than chasing another goal. Sheffield United protected the centre and made Wrexham build from wide areas, where the visitors created little danger.
