Pickford’s debut ended 0-0
Pickford made his senior debut against Germany at Wembley in November 2017. The match finished 0-0 and Germany did not score. He later recalled feeling unusually nervous before the game, but early saves helped him settle and showed that he could handle international football.

The 2018 World Cup match against Colombia brought a different test. England conceded late and went to penalties. Pickford saved Carlos Bacca’s attempt, allowing Eric Dier to take the kick that completed England’s first World Cup shootout win.
Spain and Switzerland showed his ability with the ball
England’s 3-2 win away to Spain in October 2018 demonstrated that the side could beat an elite opponent outside Wembley. Pickford helped begin attacks with accurate passes and then dealt with pressure after England had built a three-goal lead.
Against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League third-place play-off, he scored one penalty and saved another. The match stands out because he had to take responsibility as a penalty taker before returning to his usual task of reading an opponent’s run-up.
Mexico required control after Quansah’s red card
England beat World Cup co-hosts Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca in July 2026 despite Jarell Quansah being sent off in the 54th minute. Pickford made important saves, caught crosses and organised the reduced defence while the home side increased the pressure.
The five choices are personal memories, not a ranking of his best statistical performances. Together they show the changing demands on an international goalkeeper: preventing goals, saving penalties, starting attacks and remaining composed when England must defend with ten players.
