VAR made two important decisions in the first hour
Mateta put the ball in the net after six minutes, but VAR confirmed that the striker was offside. Besiktas then moved ahead in first-half added time when Wilfred Ndidi received a long pass and scored from the edge of the area.

Palace responded immediately after the break. Pino scored from close range in the 51st minute after Ali Khalaili’s cross. VAR checked the move and confirmed that the goal was onside. Four minutes later Mateta produced a clean finish for his first goal of the season and put Palace 2-1 ahead.
Olaitan punished Palace for failing to protect the lead
The visitors had changed the match in four minutes, but they did not control the next phase. Besiktas kept attacking and Palace needed several clearances inside their own area. In the 73rd minute Palace cleared the ball towards Olaitan, who dribbled past two defenders and scored the equaliser.
Pino has now scored in three consecutive Europa League matches. His run is a major positive, but the evening also showed why Palace cannot rely only on short bursts of attacking quality. Once ahead, they needed a longer spell with the ball and better protection in front of the central defenders.

Palace did not score after the red card
Umit Akdag was sent off in the 77th minute for a dangerous tackle on Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Palace forward was unable to continue and left the field eight minutes later. Even with an extra player, the visitors did not find a third goal.
Besiktas finished the round eighth with seven points, while Palace stood 15th with four. The draw ended Palace’s two-match losing run, but the main conclusion is a missed opportunity: the London side led after 55 minutes and could not turn that advantage into a win.
