Two penalties brought the first half to life
The opening half hour produced few clear chances. Chelsea then won a penalty when Ryan Gravenberch challenged Moises Caicedo inside the area, and Morgan Rogers placed the ball into the right corner.

Liverpool replied three minutes later. Wesley Fofana handled the ball at a corner, and Cody Gakpo drove the resulting penalty low into the opposite corner to make the score 1-1.
Both goalkeepers protected the draw
Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Rogers early in the second half and later made an important one-handed save from Marco Palestra. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders stopped a close-range Ronald Araujo header.
Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz increased Liverpool’s attacking pace after coming on. Chelsea defenders blocked two dangerous close-range efforts, and the match finished level after 90 minutes.
The shootout needed sixteen kicks
Valentin Barco hit the post, giving Kostas Tsimikas a chance to end the shootout, but the Liverpool defender fired over. Mike Penders later saved from Ryan Gravenberch, before Mamardashvili denied Emmanuel Emegha when the Chelsea striker could have won it.
Joe Gomez converted Liverpool’s eighth kick, his first successful penalty in a competitive match despite never scoring for the club from open play. Fofana then sent Chelsea’s final effort over the bar.
Liverpool extended their shootout record against Chelsea
Liverpool converted six of eight penalties and Chelsea scored five, with Fofana’s miss deciding the contest. The Reds have now won all five shootouts between the clubs since 2007.
The match drew 60,214 spectators. Liverpool had 10 shots to Chelsea’s 11 and 52 percent possession to 48. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson played for a Chelsea side coached by former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Bournemouth await in the quarter-final
Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the quarter-final in December. The result continued their cup run after an even match in which both goals during normal time came from penalties.
Chelsea leave the competition after creating several second-half chances and twice coming close to deciding the shootout before sudden death.
