Garner opened the scoring after 34 minutes
Newcastle created early pressure, but Everton produced the first decisive finish. Tyrique George forced Amar Dedic to lose possession, Hayden Hackney moved the ball to James Garner and the midfielder curled his shot into the bottom corner.

Jack Grealish was not in the Everton squad because of a breach of club discipline. Without him, George and Tyler Dibling supplied the width around Thierno Barry.
Hackney doubled the lead before half-time
Pickford quickly released the ball, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall carried the counterattack forward and Barry crossed from the left. Hackney arrived through the centre and finished first time in the 45th minute.
It was Hackney’s first Everton goal on only his third start since joining from Middlesbrough. Everton reached the interval 2-0 ahead despite Newcastle creating the larger number of attempts.
Barry added the third goal
Newcastle introduced Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at half-time and increased the pressure. Pickford made important saves as the visitors continued to shoot whenever space opened near the area.
Dewsbury-Hall then broke down the left and supplied Barry, who controlled the pass and scored Everton’s third goal in the 69th minute.
Burn’s late goal did not change the winner
Dan Burn headed in Joe Willock’s cross in the 88th minute, but Newcastle did not have enough time to complete a comeback. The visitors finished with 28 shots to Everton’s 11 and 57 percent possession, yet scored only once.
The result sends David Moyes’ side to Fleetwood Town, who eliminated Arsenal on penalties. Everton can reach a League Cup semi-final for the first time since 2016. Everton and Newcastle meet again in the Premier League on 2 November.
