Four players face late checks before the match

Everton lost 2-0 at Arsenal in their previous match. Captain James Tarkowski said the players must improve their recent results and use the cup match as an opportunity to change the mood.

Jack Grealish has been recovering from a virus and was described as only 50 per cent ready. Jarrad Branthwaite faces a late check after concussion symptoms. Newcastle will assess Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who are both doubtful.

Newcastle have won seven consecutive fourth-round matches

Newcastle are trying to reach the League Cup quarter-finals for a fifth consecutive season. They have won their last seven fourth-round matches and 18 matches in the competition since the start of 2022/23.

The visitors also won 4-1 on their most recent league visit to Everton. That result does not decide a knockout match, but it gives Newcastle recent experience of playing against this opponent away from home.

Both managers may change their starting line-ups

David Moyes has taken a team through only one of his previous seven League Cup fourth-round ties. Newcastle coach Matthias Jaissle must balance a strong recent cup record with fitness concerns and another league meeting only days later.

Everton and Newcastle meet again in the Premier League on 2 November. The cup line-ups may therefore include changes, but a defeat cannot be repaired in a return match.

The winner will visit Fleetwood in the quarter-finals

The other ties in the next round are Fleetwood against the winner of Everton and Newcastle, Manchester City against Bradford City, Crystal Palace against Sunderland, and Liverpool against Bournemouth.

That bracket gives this match an immediate consequence beyond qualification: the winner will travel to League Two Fleetwood for a place in the semi-finals.

Tickets are sold out at Everton’s new stadium

Everton confirmed that tickets are sold out. The match is also the first at the stadium to offer a new smartphone-based audio description service for blind and partially sighted supporters.

Sky Sports+ will show the game in the United Kingdom. If the score is level after 90 minutes, the final quarter-final place will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
