Chelsea defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the Women’s Super League at Stamford Bridge, where Alyssa Thompson scored the only goal. The result stopped Arsenal’s unbeaten league sequence at 20 matches and gave Chelsea their third WSL victory.
Thompson struck six minutes before half-time, following up after goalkeeper Anneke Borbe saved a long-range shot from Keira Walsh. Arsenal had already hit the post through Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey, but their early pressure did not produce a goal.

Chelsea moved onto 10 points, level with Tottenham and two behind leaders Manchester City. Arsenal, who had drawn their previous two league fixtures, were left seven points behind City ahead of their meeting on 4 October.
Arsenal’s chances and Chelsea’s decisive rebound
Sky Sports reported that Arsenal controlled the opening spell and twice struck the woodwork before the breakthrough. The Guardian’s live account also described Chelsea as having been barely involved before Thompson scored.
The key sequence began with Walsh’s attempt from distance. Borbe made the initial save, but Thompson reached the loose ball in the penalty area and finished from close range. The score remained unchanged through the second half.
Arsenal improved after the interval, according to Sky Sports, with Chloe Kelly having an angled drive blocked and Alessia Russo seeing a shot charged down. The Guardian also recorded an opportunity for Baum, who got through but faced an awkward shooting angle and was denied by Hannah Hampton.
Other openings ended without an equaliser. In the Guardian’s 72nd-minute account, Batlle reached the byline and found Caitlin Foord about 12 yards from goal, but Foord took another touch and the opportunity went. Six minutes later, Kelly created a separate chance for Foord, who again could not turn it into a goal.
Stina Blackstenius also got through and lifted the ball over Hampton, only for it to hit the top of the bar and go over. The assistant referee had raised a flag during that move, the Guardian reported.

Hampton had further work during the closing exchanges. The live report recorded her collecting after Foord attempted to find a team-mate and the ball deflected. It separately described the goalkeeper claiming a blocked Kelly cross, then punching a corner delivered by Catley.
At the other end, a Lauren James cross was dropped by Borbe, although a flag followed. Emily Fox also received a pass from Little and delivered a cross for Arsenal without a team-mate applying a finish, according to the live account.
Slegers identifies technical and psychological issues
Arsenal manager Renee Slegers told Sky Sports she was disappointed, while describing the Chelsea away fixture as a difficult assignment. She judged that her players had competed well physically and dominated until the goal, but found the second half harder and more demanding.
Asked what was not working for Arsenal, Slegers described a combination of factors, including technical and psychological issues. She said the staff were examining those problems and retained confidence in the players’ quality.
Slegers also expressed a wish to take pressure away from the squad, explaining that she felt the players performed best when they could feel lighter. Her response placed the emphasis on reflecting, continuing to work and moving forwards rather than questioning their ability.
On the title race, she said Arsenal had already dropped too many points to earn the right to discuss it. Her stated immediate focus was the next match and the points available there.
The defeat was Arsenal’s first in the league since October 2025, according to Sky Sports. Chelsea’s three-point return put them closer to City, while Arsenal’s next meeting with the leaders comes with the reported seven-point gap already established.
