Newcastle Eagles recorded a 91-67 home victory over Caledonia Gladiators at Vertu Arena, building a substantial first-half advantage before closing the game with another decisive burst.

The Eagles led from an 11-0 opening run and, according to the club’s match report, never surrendered that advantage. Tavis Smith led Newcastle’s scoring with 19 points and four assists, while Cole Long supplied an all-round return of 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

The result gave Newcastle another high-scoring home performance early in the campaign, but the more telling feature was the defensive work that repeatedly stopped Caledonia from sustaining a recovery. The Eagles reported 43 rebounds to the Gladiators’ 32, while also forcing 20 turnovers and collecting 11 steals. Those figures underlined Newcastle’s control of possessions at both ends of the court.

Fast start created a lead Newcastle protected

Blondeau Tchoukuiegno scored seven points as Newcastle made their rapid start, moving 11-0 ahead before Caledonia found a response. The visitors cut the deficit to six points, but Newcastle restored separation through a run helped by Kyle Carey from the bench.

Newcastle ended the first quarter 26-11 in front. Long struck from three-point range and Carey’s late steals and dunks, followed by another Long basket, helped establish a 54-28 half-time score.

That 26-point interval margin left Caledonia needing an exceptional second half, although the Gladiators did show greater resistance after the break. They opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run, only for Smith to answer with consecutive three-pointers as Long continued to score. Newcastle’s lead then reached 66-37.

Caledonia responded with a 15-4 spell to finish the third period, with Terry Roberts, Braxton Williams and Al-Amir Dawes identified by Newcastle as important contributors to the push. The Eagles’ lead was reduced to 18 points entering the final quarter, and the Gladiators scored the first five points of it.

Newcastle nevertheless re-established control. Tchoukuiegno and Smith halted the early fourth-quarter momentum, and the home side tightened defensively before ending the contest on a 14-4 run. The report said Caledonia’s foul trouble also gave Newcastle regular visits to the free-throw line during the closing period.

Balanced production supported Eagles defence

Smith’s 19 points made him Newcastle’s leading scorer, but the victory was underpinned by contributions across the line-up. Long recorded nine rebounds, and his defensive numbers added to the team’s 11 steals.

Tchoukuiegno finished with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, combining scoring with playmaking in a performance that helped Newcastle maintain their advantage after the early surge. Carey added 11 points off the bench.

  • Tavis Smith: 19 points and four assists
  • Cole Long: 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks
  • Blondeau Tchoukuiegno: 16 points, six rebounds and six assists
  • Kyle Carey: 11 points

The Eagles were again without captain Josh Ward-Hibbert, who the club said was continuing his recovery from an ankle injury. He was dressed and on the bench, but head coach Marc Steutel did not use him.

His absence makes the collective nature of the result particularly notable, although it is too early to draw firm conclusions from a developing season. Newcastle’s ability to create an early margin, withstand Caledonia’s most productive spell and then finish strongly offered evidence of a side able to win through defensive disruption and scoring runs.

For Caledonia, the second-half rally demonstrated that the game was not without resistance after the interval. However, the 54-28 half-time deficit and Newcastle’s response whenever the visitors threatened meant the comeback never developed into a final-quarter contest.
