Arike Ogunbowale scores 45 in WNBA play-off record

Arike Ogunbowale’s record 45 points helped Dallas Wings beat Golden State Valkyries 108-100 in overtime and take their WNBA play-off series to a decider.

Arike Ogunbowale has set a new WNBA play-off single-game scoring mark after producing 45 points in Dallas Wings’ 108-100 overtime victory over Golden State Valkyries, according to FIBA.

The guard’s display carried Dallas to a win which forced the series to a deciding game. FIBA reported that Ogunbowale’s total was the highest recorded in a WNBA post-season match, making her contribution decisive both in the result and in extending the Wings’ campaign.

Dallas were still facing defeat in regulation when Ogunbowale made a three-point shot in the closing moments to level the score, FIBA said. The Wings then won the extra period to complete an eight-point victory over Golden State.

As well as her 45 points, Ogunbowale made five three-pointers and registered seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. The late equaliser was one of those five three-pointers. The combination of scoring and all-round production gave Dallas a route back into the contest after the late equaliser had taken it beyond regulation.

A record display when Dallas needed it

FIBA described Ogunbowale’s 45-point return as a new landmark for scoring in a WNBA play-off game. In a fixture decided only after overtime, the scale of that output was especially significant: her late three-pointer prevented Golden State from closing out the game in regulation, while Dallas ultimately turned the opportunity into a series-levelling win.

The report did not identify every scoring sequence from overtime, but it established that Ogunbowale supplied more than a scoring burst. Her seven rebounds, four assists and three steals underlined an influence across several areas as the Wings moved the match-up to a decider.

The win took the series to a deciding game against the Valkyries. The result means Dallas will have another opportunity to advance in the deciding game.

FIBA said the performance had drawn attention from followers who were less familiar with Ogunbowale’s wider playing record. The 29-year-old is a four-time WNBA All-Star, according to FIBA, and her latest display adds a post-season benchmark to that profile.

International experience behind the performance

Ogunbowale’s career has also included extensive basketball outside the WNBA. FIBA reported that she represented the United States at youth and senior level, beginning with the 2013 FIBA Under-16 Women’s AmeriCup, where the USA won gold and Ogunbowale averaged 10 points per game.

She subsequently featured at the 2014 FIBA Under-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup, where the United States won the title. FIBA said she contributed 15 points and eight rebounds in the final against Spain.

At senior level, Ogunbowale won the 2019 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in San Juan, Puerto Rico. According to FIBA, she averaged 10.2 points per game during that tournament and played the second-most minutes for the USA. Her international appearances have also included the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament and several 3×3 events for her country.

Her club experience in FIBA competitions began with Turkish side Orman Genclik in the 2019-20 EuroCup Women campaign, where FIBA said she averaged just under 22 points per game. Dynamo Kursk then signed her for two seasons, allowing her to play in EuroLeague Women; across those two campaigns, FIBA reported averages of just under 16 points and four assists.

That record offers context rather than an explanation for one exceptional night. What is established by the result is that Ogunbowale’s 45 points have changed the immediate terms of Dallas’ series: the Wings have a deciding game, and the Valkyries will meet Dallas again in the deciding game after the record-setting performance.
